An organic cocrystal based on phthalocyanine with ideal packing mode towards high-performance ambipolar property?

Abstract
The organic cocrystal strategy provides a shortcut toward ambipolar materials but realizing excellent electrical performance remains a challenge due to the lack of a definite direction in the rational design of cocrystals. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrated a novel strategy of using highly compatible and large-π-conjugated pairs to achieve high-performance ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), referring to zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) as p-type and hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) as n-type units. The identical macrocycles and complementary electronic property of the pairs provide an ideal platform to realize the tight face-to-face stacking mode with a large π–π overlap, which is the desired supramolecular packing mode for high-efficiency charge transport. As a result, the ZnPc–F16CuPc cocrystal exhibited ambipolar field-effect mobility up to 1.64 and 0.68 cm2 V?1 s?1 for holes and electrons, respectively, one of the best results in the field.
