Accelerated solvent extraction of the antioxidant Irganox 1076 in linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) granules before and after γ-irradiation
Environmental Science & Policy ( IF 6.424 ) Pub Date: , DOI: 10.1039/A801530I
To achieve effective and reproducible extractions of the antioxidant Irganox 1076 from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) components at reduced time and cost, the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) technique was evaluated with solvent composition and temperatures as test variables. The aim was to find proper extraction conditions for the balance between high diffusion rate of the analytes versus solvation of the plastic material. High extraction yields and reproducible results, RSDs between 9.7–12.5%, were obtained using ethyl acetate mixed with hexane 90:10 (v:v) at 100 °C. The results showed that no grinding of 4 mm granules was necessary before extraction nor was concentration of the extracts needed before LC analysis. By using the established extraction method, a comparison between γ-irradiated and non-irradiated LLDPE granules showed that more than 96% of the Irganox 1076 was lost after γ-irradiation (2 × 25 kGy).

A turn-on fluorescent aptasensor for adenosine detection based on split aptamers and graphene oxide?
Environmental Science & Policy ( IF 6.424 ) Pub Date: 2014-02-10 , DOI: 10.1039/C4AN00084F
A simple, sensitive and selective turn-on fluorescent aptasensor for adenosine detection was developed based on target-induced split aptamer fragment conjunction and different interactions of graphene oxide and the two states of the designed aptamer sequences.

A two-component polymeric optode membrane based on a multifunctional ionic liquid?
Environmental Science & Policy ( IF 6.424 ) Pub Date: 2010-10-20 , DOI: 10.1039/C0AN00770F
This work details the use of a 2-component optode membrane which is capable of generating three distinct colours in the presence of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ ions. It has been found that the ionic liquid (IL) trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide [P 6,6,6,14 ][DCA] can act as plasticizer, ligand and transducer dye when used in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes, which significantly simplifies the optode membrane cocktail. Upon exposure to an aqueous Cu 2+ solution, a yellow colour is generated within the membrane, while exposure to an aqueous Co 2+ solution generates a blue colour. Exposure to a solution containing both ions produces a green colour. Vibrational spectroscopy has been used to investigate the molecular basis of the IL–metal ion the binding mechanism. Analytical characteristics of the membranes including the effect of interfering ions, binding constants and the limit of detection for both ions have been estimated. Finally the case of simultaneous dual-analyte recognition is presented based on two distinct absorption maxima.

A unique fluorescence biosensor for selective detection of tryptophan and histidine?
Environmental Science & Policy ( IF 6.424 ) Pub Date: 2014-07-16 , DOI: 10.1039/C4AN00829D
A novel photoinduced electron transfer (PET) based substituted calix[4]arene fluoroionophore has been used for the selective recognition of tryptophan ( L -Trp) and histidine ( L -His) by emission spectroscopy. The detection limit of the synthesized receptor was found to be 0.00826 nM for L -Trp and 0.00158 nM for L -His. Moreover, this probe has been applied for the recognition of L -Trp and L -His from blood serum.

A water-soluble sulfonate-BODIPY based fluorescent probe for selective detection of HOCl/OCl? in aqueous media?
Environmental Science & Policy ( IF 6.424 ) Pub Date: 2014-04-09 , DOI: 10.1039/C4AN00466C
A new, water-soluble BODIPY dye 1 , bearing sulfonate groups at the 2- and 6-positions was found to be a sensitive and selective fluorescent probe for the detection of HOCl/OCl ? in aqueous buffer solution. The probe, which displays extremely weak fluorescence owing to efficient singlet excited state quenching by photoinduced electron transfer (PeT) from an electron-rich catechol group at a meso -position, responds to HOCl/OCl ? through a dramatic enhancement of its fluorescence intensity.
