Cas no 81129-83-1 (Cilastatin sodium)

Cilastatin sodium is a renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor used in combination with imipenem to enhance its antibacterial efficacy. It works by selectively inhibiting the enzyme dehydropeptidase-1 (DHP-1) in the kidneys, preventing the degradation of imipenem and thereby extending its therapeutic activity. This combination significantly improves the pharmacokinetic profile of imipenem, ensuring higher and more sustained plasma concentrations. Cilastatin sodium is particularly valuable in treating severe infections caused by β-lactamase-producing bacteria, as it allows imipenem to maintain its broad-spectrum antibacterial effects. Its renal protective properties also reduce the risk of nephrotoxicity associated with imipenem. The compound is highly water-soluble and exhibits excellent stability in pharmaceutical formulations.
