Cristobalite is a high-temperature polymorph of silica (SiO?), characterized by its tetragonal crystal structure. It forms under stable conditions at temperatures above 1470°C and can persist metastably at lower temperatures. Cristobalite exhibits low thermal expansion, high melting point (~1713°C), and excellent thermal shock resistance, making it suitable for refractory applications. Its low density and high purity also lend utility in precision casting molds, ceramics, and specialty glass production. Due to its inertness and hardness, it is used as a filler in composites and coatings. Care must be taken during handling, as respirable crystalline silica poses occupational health risks. Cristobalite’s stability and performance under extreme conditions distinguish it from other silica forms.
