Molecular acoustics. Part 3.—Ultrasonic relaxation and ring inversion in some cyclic sulphites

Transactions of the Faraday Society Pub Date: DOI: 10.1039/TF9706600310

Abstract

An ultrasonic relaxation has been observed in trimethylene sulphite and several methyl substituted derivatives, and this is attributed to perturbation of the equilibrium between two chair conformers in which the exocyclic S[double bond, length as m-dash]O group is either axial or equatorial. The experimental data have been analyzed to yield the energy barriers associated with these ring inversion in these molecules.
