Preparation of quinolines from α-methylene-ketones

Abstract
A convenient procedure for the preparation of 2,3- and 1,2,3-substituted quinolines from α-methylene-ketones, viaβ-chlorovinyladehydes, is described. A mechanism for the cyclisation is proposed. The n.m.r. spectra of a number of quinolines and quinolinium salts are recorded.
