Abstract
We have studied the alignment of nematic liquid crystals on photo-sensitive chemisorbed monolayers. Surface modification and a single UV exposure at normal incidence resulted in photo-dimerized monolayers. A uniform, planar alignment of liquid crystals is realized on these surfaces.
