Design and development of novel reactive amine nanocontainers for a self-healing epoxy adhesive: self-repairing investigation using the lap shear test

Abstract
A self-healing epoxy adhesive is reported based on a commercial structural adhesive which has the ability to heal under room temperature conditions. Various reactive amine nanocontainers were achieved via a simple and novel double emulsion technique and characterized by spectroscopic study. The effect of the shell wall structure of the nanocontainers on the adhesion properties of the epoxy adhesive in steel–steel, aluminum–aluminum and copper–copper metal junctions was studied in detail. Virgin fracture toughness and recovery of fracture toughness of the adhesives were evaluated through lap shear strength test. The overall results open the door for the application of the lap shear strength test in self-healing adhesives. For further investigation, the self-healing ability of the fabricated adhesives was characterized by FT-IR, fluorescence and SEM microscopy.
