Elemental and molecular speciation of lead particles by dynamic C-60 secondary ion mass spectrometry?

Abstract

In this work, dynamic C60+ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been used for the complete speciation (molecular, fine – a subset of molecular speciation – and elemental) of a series of lead salts – lead(II and IV) oxide, lead(II and IV) acetate. The molecular and elemental lead characterization and differentiation for a series of acetate and oxide molecules is demonstrated utilizing both positive and negative ion modes. The results show the feasibility of direct speciation without the need for reference spectra by stoichiometric ratioing both molecular and elemental ions. Ratioing the intensities of specific high-m/z ions can differentiate compounds comprised of the same elements in different oxidation states (fine speciation). It is anticipated that this work can be extended to the analysis of particle mixtures to provide speciation information of inorganic particles by their molecular signals not available through isotopic patterns.
